Vaccinations are important to protect your cat against infectious diseases caused by viruses and bacteria. Vaccines also protect people from diseases that would be transmitted by your cat, such as Rabies.
Yes! In Ontario Rabies vaccines are required by law and cats can accidentally get outdoors and come in contact with another disease-carrying cat. Wildlife such as bats can enter your home where your indoor cat lives and infect them with Rabies.
The American Association of Feline Practitioners recommends annual Rabies vaccinations and core vaccination with FVRCP every three years for all cats.
The benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks. Some cats will experience mild symptoms such as lethargy, decreased appetite or low-grade fever which typically resolve in a few days. Rarely more serious reactions such as facial swelling, vomiting or diarrhea can occur soon after vaccines and should be seen by one of our veterinarians.
